Lego is to make the leap from the real world to virtual reality with the release of a new augmented reality mobile app which allows real-world Lego objects to be brought to life.

Lego Fusion contains a pack of 200 plastic bricks and a custom base plate upon which to build, the resulting plastic creations can then be photographed with compatible Apple or Android devices for import into a number of downloadable games.

Ditte Bruun Pedersen, senior design manager at Lego's Future Lab, said: “Kids want to be this mini-figure and they want to be in this world they create,' Pedersen said.

“Children have always imagined their LEGO creations as immersive worlds which come to life for hours of role-play and adventure.

“Recently, smart phones and tablets have become a popular platform for empowering game mechanisms that kids love. Fusion brings these two favorite play patterns together in an experience where real-life builds come to life in a virtual game, inspiring creativity, strategy, and the pride of creation.”

Lego Fusion launches in the US from August with no word on a possible UK release.
