Jeremy Paxman, figurehead of the BBC’s flagship Newsnight magazine, has had one of the oddest interviews of his career after an encounter with Channel 4’s Jon Snow.

The two journalists met at BBC HQ for one last interview but before they sat down Snow took the opportunity to pay special tribute to Paxman with a free-styling ‘Paxo Don’t Go’ ditty on a handy ‘play me’ piano in the foyer.

The musical interlude presaged a possible channel hop by Paxman with Channel 4’s chief creative officer Jay Hunt said to have offered him the opportunity to present some non-news related output.

Paxman’s final stint on BBC2 was a low-key affair, save for a flagship interview with London mayor Boris Johnson on the back of a tandem.
