Tesco has announced that its blinkbox music streaming service has notched up 1.5m app downloads as the service marks its first anniversary.

The announcement dovetails with a move into home music systems following development of an app for popular wireless music system Sonos, inspired by rapid mobile growth which sees 92 per cent of subscribers now access the service via smartphones or tablets.

Managing director Mark Bennett commented: “Our service has seen extraordinary growth, particularly on mobile which is now well established as the most popular way to access and enjoy entertainment.

“The consistently high reviews of our app in both the Apple and Google stores are testament to the fact that users are clearly loving our simple approach to music discovery and enjoyment.”

“Our new app for Sonos demonstrates our ambition to deliver a great music experience both on the move and in the home.”

Blinkbox music is one of three Tesco-owned digital entertainment services alongside blinkbox movies and books.
