Apple has set its sights on becoming a major player in the online storage arena with the announcement that it is to launch its own app to rival services such as Dropbox and Skydrive, iCloud Drive, whilst simultaneously updating its iMessage app to take on the likes of WhatsApp.

Users will notice improved functionality in messaging with the ability to send and receive text messages across Apple’s entire family of devices whilst the act of issuing group messages has also been simplified to a single swipe.

Not content with this Apple also unveiled HomeKit, software which allows people to manipulate their home environment from their smartphone by remotely activating garage doors, unlock the front door or adjust the thermostat.

The update coincides with a general spring clean of its mobile and desktop operating systems and the introduction of new Healthkit software, designed to be compatible with third party apps and devices such as Health – which alerts nearby emergency services should your vital statistics give cause for concern.

iCloud launches with 5GB of free space with users subject to a fee should they exceed this limit.
