Google Labs have teamed up with production company Nomint and web developer Hello Monday to introduce a new virtual spelling bee to its Chrome web browser, providing a sophisticated new tool to those seeking to brush up their English skills.

Spell Up takes the form of a simple word game, given a graphical and fun twist by game designers to entice players to give it a bash.

The game invites players to spell words presented to them in order to build a ‘word tower’, with new floors added by correctly pronouncing words, correctly identifying words from jumbled letters and guessing mystery words.

Nomint's founder Yannis Konstantinidis commented: "We love working with the Creative Lab! They always come to us with some groundbreaking but also really clear concept of some crazy new idea. With the Spell Up video the main challenge was to create something that reflects the mechanisms of the game (an impossibly tall tower that balances on a single block of wood) while making it look as 'realistic' as possible."
