A new cloud storage service called iCloud Drive was unveiled by Apple at its Worldwide Developer Conference in California today as well as a new OS Yosemite, available in the autumn.

On the way to Yosemite!

The new cloud service will take on wildly popular services like Dropbox andBox , said ZDNet and will feature deep integration with devices running a new mobile iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite.

iCloud Drive allows you to store any type of file in iCloud and access it on any device, including Macs, iPhones, iPads and even Windows devices (via a web browser).

Sharing documents between iOS and OS X is a long-requested feature that users have been asking for.

With iCloud Drive, you can organise your files in the cloud the way you like, create as many folders as you want, and add tags to find files faster.

ZDNet says Files stored in iCloud Drive are visible in the iCloud document picker in the new mobile system iOS 8 directly within apps. Documents, folders and tags are synchronized across devices in the background.

Like Dropbox, iCloud Drive's primary competitor, documents are visible in the OS X Yosemite Finder

• 5GB – Free

• 20GB – $0.99/month

• 200GB – $3.99/month

iCloud Drive will be available when OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 are released to the public this fall.

Yosemite includes a new design that streamlines the toolbar for using the computer’s calendar, clock and calculator. It also includes new icons.

The new mobile system, iOS 8, adds functions like a smarter keyboard and new features for emails and text messages - also new health and connected-home features for the software powering the iPhone and iPad.

HealthKit lets people monitor their health and acts as a data hub for fitness apps. HomeKit includes home-automation elements so people can control locks, garage doors and lights from their devices.

The release of the new tools today shows how Apple is increasingly positioning its gadgets to be more of a hub for people’s lives.

“Our operating system, devices and services work together in harmony,” said Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook. “Together they provide an integrated and continuous experience across all of our products.”
