Edinburgh College

Team Multiply, led by student Mark Phillips, Mentored by Charlie Boyle, Edinburgh College The award-winning HND Visual Communication Graphic Design course at Edinburgh College will be hosting its Industry Night & Show later this month at Creative Exchange. The course recently celebrated the success of a groundbreaking employer engagement project, where graphic design students worked on a team based live brief for a major client, in an industry environment for one week, collaborating with art directors and designers from six Edinburgh-based agencies. The project was part of the course’s mentoring scheme, which has been phenomenally successful in preparing design students for industry since its inception in 2009. In 2013/4, the programme won awards at the SQA Star Awards and the College Development Network for employer-engagement and learning and teaching, respectively. The ‘One Week’ project took place in March at four different studio locations across Edinburgh and involved six creative teams, working with Family, Lewis, Multiply, Neish, Rapp and Whitespace. The client was the Edrington Group’s Cutty Sark whisky, whose global brand controller, Jason Craig, was also actively involved in the project. At the end of the week the students pitched to Cutty Sark at their offices in Perth, and the winning team were offered invites to the 2014 Marketing Society Star Awards, and will become the first recipients of the Society’s new one-year graduate membership. To promote the project, the design team produced a short documentary featuring an interview with designer Charlie Boyle from Multiply UK, which you can view on Vimeo. This year the HND Graphic Design Industry Night & Show, sponsored by Cutty Sark and GF Smith, will be held on 29 May at Creative Exchange, in Leith, Edinburgh.
