The BBC Trust has officially begun the hunt for its next chair following Lord Patten’s resignation, with the successful candidate to receive a pay packet of £110,000 culture secretary Sajid Javid has revealed.

Lord Patten revealed he was stepping down earlier this month, on health grounds following major heart surgery.

Until his permanent successor has been appointed vice chairman Diane Coyle will assume his duties, but the position has been advertised publicly from today.

The deadline for entries is 20 June.

Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said: “The BBC is a great British institution that entertains and educates while helping to showcase the best of British around the world.

“We need an exceptional individual to lead the Trust to get the best out of the BBC for licence fee payers.”

A shortlist of candidates will be interviewed over the summer, with the preferred candidate to then appear before the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee for pre-appointment scrutiny and the Government will then make its final decision.

The Chair will be paid £110,000 a year for three to four days per week, the same as Lord Patten received. Their term will last four years.

The key priority facing the new Chair will be reviewing the BBC Charter, which expires at the end of 2016.
