BT has secured the naming rights for Scottish Rugby’s Murrayfield stadium as part of a multi-million pound sponsorship deal.

Deal: Murrayfield stadium

Murrayfield will be known as BT Murrayfield Stadium for the duration of the four-year deal, and the telecoms provider - which has invested heavily in sports broadcasting with its BT Sport broadcast service – will sponsor the Scotland 7s side from the 2014/15 Sevens World Series.

Also included in the deal is sponsorship of Scotland’s domestic league and cup competitions, and four new academies from Scottish Rugby for the development of young talent.

Dominic McKay, director of commercial operations, communications and public affairs at Scottish Rugby, said: “In branding our home the BT Murrayfield stadium it reiterates our joint view that the name of the home of Scottish rugby that has been synonymous with the game in our country since 1925 had to be retained.

“BT is a massive global brand, which we’ve worked with before as sponsor of our domestic league and cup competitions between 1999 and 2006.

“We also have the pleasure of working with BT Sport, which began its relationship with us at the start of this season, as it sponsors both Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby.”

McKay added that the deal would enable Scottish Rugby to continue to invest in the game. It follows another four-year multi-million pound sponsorship with Italian firm Macron, which was sealed last year, to supply the Scotland national team kit.

The BT sponsorship slot was held by RBS since 2010, although McKay said the bank would carry on as a national team sponsor.
