With Barcelona's uncompromising devotion to total football making the club less invincible these days, it's perhaps time for their most iconic player to deliver for Argentina.

At 26, Lionel Messi is an unbelievable talent but he won't have any right to be regarded as the greatest player of all time unless he is able to triumphantly lift the World Cup - and 2014 could well be his best shot.

Although this commercial for Adidas features other players, Messi is its central focus. As the Argentine striker tries to sleep, he's distracted by thoughts of the other spectacularly good players who'll be taking part this summer and you could be forgiven for thinking that he has the weight of the world on his shoulders.

'City of God' director Fernando Meirelles has done a fine job with this and - like much of Adidas's advertising - it taps into a feeling that appeals to the real football fan... something that makes Nike's advertising look superficial.

There's room for both approaches, of course, and it seems likely that both will achieve their objective... you just sense that the Adidas football boots which are sold will get a bit more use out of them - and you can't help feeling that that's a win.
