Secretary of State Vince Cable is to officially launch the Global Digital Media and Entertainment Alliance between the UK and China at this year’s Technology Innovator’s Forum (TIF-IN) in China, which takes place this week.

The alliance has been formed to give British companies access to an estimated £2bn of trade and investment opportunities in these key sectors.

Cable has written more extensively about the launch on The Drum ahead of his appearance at TIF-IN in Qingdao, China next week.

“This not only represents a significant opportunity for British business but also underlines our commitment to forging long term economic and cultural partnerships with China,” he said of the alliance.

TIF-IN – an initiative formed jointly by the government and industry to promote the UK creative industry and highlight trade and investment opportunities – will kick off on 29 May in China.

The forum, which launched for the first time in Los Angeles last February, with a second one following last October in London, has been a huge success – resulting in a combined £1bn of investment.

The third event, which brings together entertainment, digital, media, entrepreneurial technology companies and investors to collaborate on the next generation of music, film, digital and video game products, will take place in Qingdao, China.

Ahead of attending the TIF-IN secretary of state Vince Cable has written an opinion piece for The Drum on why the UK creative industry should be excited by the 'huge' trade opportunities in China.

“The first TIF-IN was held in LA in February 2013 and led to £60m in deals, the second forum took place in London in October last year and undertook £14m of trade in just one day. Combined, these two events generated more than £1bn of investment.

“I am confident that TIF-IN China will continue this success.”

Cable's full article will be published on The Drum shortly.
