Supermarket giant Tesco has bowed to pressure and agreed to remove confectionary from check-out tills across all of its stores, after being exhorted to do so by health and parenting groups.

Internal research conducted by the retailer found that 65 per cent of shoppers wanted sweets and chocolates shifted to remove temptations and make healthier choices for their children.

The policy change will affect all 1,800 Express and Convenience stores throughout the UK and Ireland, bringing them into line with 740 of its largest stores – which have operated the policy for the past 20 years.

In lieu of these Tesco will trial a variety of healthier alternatives in their place before rolling out the change nationwide throughout the year as part of a commitment to reducing the sugar, salt and fat content of its soft drinks, sandwiches and ready meals.

Tesco chief Philip Clarke, said: "We all know how easy it is to be tempted by sugary snacks at the checkout, and we want to help our customers lead healthier lives.
