Senior Sun executives to meet transgender group over ‘sex swap’ storm
Senior executives from The Sun have agreed to meet with members of transgender group All About trans next month as they seek to make amends for their part in a scandal surrounding coverage of a scientist gored by a stag.
Dr Kate Stone fell victim to the beast whilst holidaying in Scotland last year but the story was picked up by the national media who shoe horned in references to her sexuality.
Six papers in all; the Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph, the Sun, the Scottish Sun, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Record, were reported to the Press Complaints Commission by Stone over references to her gender and the barrage of ‘sex swap’ headlines.
All the papers involved subsequently agreed that their coverage had been inappropriate and removed such references from online content.
The Sun’s ombudsman, Phillipa Kennedy, expressed hope that ‘people’s attitudes will change’ in the wake of the late June meet.
