STV have brought the most famous statue in Glasgow to life as part of a PR stunt designed to mark the launch of its new city channel, STV Glasgow.

The Duke of Wellington statue occupies a prominent spot outside the city’s Gallery of Modern Art and has been a focus for traffic cone wielding pranksters keen to make their mark on the bronze piece.

This hadn’t gone unnoticed by killjoys at the local council who planned on raising the plinth to put the sculpture out of reach of even the most dexterous of climbers, sparking a public backlash in the process.

In a new twist STV recruited an actor to impersonate the Duke and go for a trot around George Square, becoming an instant hit amongst bemused locals and tourists alike. The doppelganger also became a hit online trending under the #stvglasgow hashtag for a while on Twitter.

STV Glasgow launches on 2 June.
