Royal Mail responds to online shopping boom with Sunday deliveries
Newly privatised Royal Mail has announced it is to respond to the ever-growing popularity of online shopping by introducing a Sunday parcel delivery service as part of a new trial in London.
The move will see deliveries on the Sabbath for the first time to households within the M25, with delivery offices handling the highest volume of parcels kept open seven days a week to meet rising demand.
In addition the postal firm will also extend its express parcel service, Parcelforce Worldwide, to encompass Sunday deliveries to contract customers throughout the UK from June.
Royal Mail chief Moya Greene remarked: "Through these new Sunday services we are exploring ways to improve our flexibility and provide more options for people to receive items they have ordered online.
"The support of the Communication Workers Union has enabled us to respond quickly to a changing market, underlining the importance of the ground-breaking Agenda for Growth agreement."
There is no word yet on if and when junk mail will become a Sunday morning staple.
