Guardian News & Media (GNM) has appointed New York Times associate managing editor for digital strategy Aron Pilhofer as executive editor of digital, a newly-created position.

Appointment: Aron Pilhofer

Pilhofer will be responsible for helping drive the Guardian’s digital plans and he will begin the role in the US in June before relocating to the London offices over the summer.

Janine Gibson, incoming editor in chief of theguardian.com, said: “When we began talking in March, it was immediately apparent that Aron would bring the right combination of passion, ambition and skill to the Guardian.

“He is a terrifically talented and visionary editor who clearly understands the future of digital journalism and we're delighted he is joining our team.”

At the New York Times, Pilhofer built and led a 40-person team within the news room dedicated to combining social media, analytics and technology to find new forms of journalism.

Woflgang Blau, director of digital strategy at the Guardian, added: “We are incredibly excited to have Aron join the Guardian during this critical phase of entering into a more collaborative relationship with our readers around the world.”

Pilhofer said he was “thrilled” to be joining the Guardian.
