Twitter is today rolling out a 'mute' option which will allow users to temporarily take a break from accounts that are becoming annoying.

The mute button on twitter.com and the iPhone and Android apps gives users the option of temporarily removing tweeters from their timeline without unfollowing them altogether.

It is being billed as a temporary solution if you find your timeline being clogged by overenthusiastic updates about TV shows you're not watching or sports matches you don't care about, for instance.

"Muting a user on Twitter means their tweets and retweets will no longer be visible in your home timeline, and you will no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that user," Twitter product manager Paul Rosania explained in a blog post.

"The muted user will still be able to fave, reply to, and retweet your tweets; you just won’t see any of that activity in your timeline. The muted user will not know that you’ve muted them, and of course you can unmute at any time."

The feature is being introduced to some users today and will be rolled out to everyone in the "coming weeks", Twitter said.
