Stefano Hatfield has been named as the new editor-in-chief of over 50s lifestyle magazine High50 as the title gears up to expand into additional territories and markets.

Formerly editorial director of Lebedev Holdings’ London Live television channel Hatfield will be responsible for expanding the current team to spearhead a fresh content, commerce and technology strategy for the over 50s.

High50 was soft launched in 2011 in response to growing dissatisfaction amongst the age group at the often demeaning and irrelevant way they were being targeted by brands and the media, providing a fresh platform for editorial and marketing products such as financial services, travel and health.

Hatfield said: “I’m grateful for the unique opportunities Evgeny Lebedev and Andy Mullins offered me at ESI Media, launching the i and London Live.

“However, it’s no coincidence that, in my own 50th harness an increasingly influential, but much overlooked, group of people via great content and technology. Media in general and the ad industry specifically are overly obsessed with the 16-34 demographic and it’s time to look in another direction. High50 has had a phenomenal response in beta and is now ready for a major launch.”

“People are finally waking up to the power of 50-plus. This is where the real spending power is today,” said Robert Campbell, founder of High50. “Stefano is one of the best content brains of his generation. He understands brands, content and technology and therefore how to create great editorial engagement. Under his stewardship we’re looking forward to global expansion and some very exciting new developments.”

Hatfield’s lengthy CV includes a stint as editor of Campaign magazine from 1996-2000 before joining Advertising Age in New York and going on to become launch editor of Metro NY and editor-in-chief of Metro USA. He subsequently returned to the UK to launch thelondonpaper for News International in 2006, before again moving on to become executive editor of the Independent and launch editor of i.
