Greenpeace has unleashed a new form of protestor – the Greenbee – in a film released today to highlight the importance of bees within our world.

The 52-second video, directed by Daniel Bird, sees the Greenbees take ‘Greenpeace style’ action to protest against the use of bee-killing pesticides in chemical-intensive agriculture. Using tiny banners, the Greenbees demonstrate against pesticides sold by agro chemical companies which endanger not only bees but also food production for humans as one third of food production relies on the pollinating role of bees.

“Bees are essential for the environment, agriculture and global food production. But they are vulnerable little creatures, affected by giant agrochemical companies that have created a harmful, chemical-intensive agriculture model for the sake of their profits. In reality, bees can’t fight for themselves or warn us about the catastrophic consequences for humans if they disappear – but their ongoing decline should be a wake-up call for all of us,” said Matthias Wüthrich, ecological farming campaigner and European bees project leader at Greenpeace Switzerland.

“This is why we should all act to save the bees but also to save ourselves and preserve our fragile environment.”

Daniel Bird, director of the film, added: “This film uses humor but also hopefully demonstrates the bees' vulnerability and the scale of the industry they are up against. One of the bee's placards bears the slogan ‘Save the Humans’ - ultimately what the campaign is about. If they go, we’ll go with them.”

The video aims to inspire both off and online action to save the bees as part of Greenpeace’s international ‘Save the Bees’ campaign.
