Google Play downloads exceeded Apple App Store downloads by 45 per cent in Q1 of 2014, research from App Annie has found.

The growth in emerging markets such as Mexico and Turkey led to the increase in Google Play downloads, while China was the key market for the iOS app store growth.

Despite Google Play leading in terms of downloads the research found that the iOS app store generates 85 per cent more revenue than Google, although Google looks set to narrow this gap, following growth from both the UK and US.

Games accounted for 75 per cent of revenue for the app sore, while it was discovered that 90 per cent of revenue from Google Play came from games. Messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp also proved popular.
