Undercover street artist Banksy has taken a swipe at Britain’s spooks in what is believed to be his latest work, by depicting a group of trench coated figures surveying a public phone box in Cheltenham.

The gable mural appeared over the weekend according to the Gloucestershire Echo, which interviewed the owner of the house, Karren Smith, whose property turns the corner of Fairview Road and Hewlett Road – just three miles from GCHQ’ base.

Smith said: “They were taking it down and putting it into the back of the van. I thought it might be something to do with the police, like when a crime happens. I saw these people looking and then saw the graffiti. It's pretty good. It livens up the street.”

The piece is believed tobe a wry take on the spy row engulfing US and IK intelligence agencies in the wake of revelations from whistleblower Edward Snowden.
