Twitter is ahead in the social sharing race according to ShareThis’s Q1 2014 report.

Report: ShareThis Q1 figures are out

The figures for the first quarter of the year showed that sharing via Twitter increased by 43 per cent, significantly more than the 15 per cent increase it recorded in the final quarter of 2013. Meanwhile, the tables turned on Facebook, which showed only 14 per cent growth, a sharp fall from its 57 per cent increase in Q4 2013.

Sharing increased by a quarter on Reddit, by 12 per cent on LinkedIn and by five per cent on Pinterest. Email sharing was the only channel to show a decrease, down by a quarter.

The report also showed that more than half of shares came from mobile devices at 52 per cent, and both mobile devices and desktop showed overall increases in shares at 28 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.

A blog from ShareThis stated: “As consumers continue to share content such as articles, photos, videos and more via their social networks at unprecedented rates, another notable trend this quarter is that surges like Twitter’s are driven by mobile sharing, which surpassed desktop sharing in Q1.”

The report also offered a breakdown in where the shares were coming from. It found that shares coming from the Hispanic community were up the most and showed the highest increases across every platform except Facebook, where the African Amercian community showed an increase in 20 per cent compared to the Hispanic community’s 19 per cent.

Sharing from the Hispanic community on Twitter increased dramatically between Q4 2013 and the first quarter of 2014, showing a rise of 42 per cent.

In addition, the report identified that Reddit users were more likely to be under 30, while Twitter and Pinterest sharers tended to be in the 31-35 age bracket. LinkedIn sharers on average were in the 41-50 group, and Facebook showed the oldest audience across platforms at 50+.
