Microsoft has branched out into UK TV drama production for the first time with the announcement that it is to co-fund Channel 4’s adaptation of Swedish sci-fi drama Real Humans.

The deal will see the eight part series aired exclusively in the UK by Channel 4 in 2015 at the same time as Microsoft makes the series available to Xbox owners in North America.

Produced by Kudos and renamed as simply ‘Humans’ the show will follow the fortunes of a family who purchase a human-like robot servant which harbours a secret.

Nancy Tellem, president of Microsoft's studio operation, said: “This deal with Channel 4 and Kudos underscores Xbox Entertainment Studios' commitment to programming premium TV series with global partners and creating engaging interactive experiences. It sits alongside other original commissions, including a Halo TV series executive produced by Steven Spielberg."

Piers Wenger, head of drama at Channel 4, added: “In Humans, Sam and Jon have not only crafted an ingenious and imaginative thriller, but they're also asking big, thought-provoking questions about how we live.”
