20 digital agencies founded prior to 2000: The Drum and Precedent team up for the search

The Drum has partnered with London digital agency Precedent to mark its 25th anniversary by celebrating 20 digital agencies founded before 2000 – the 20/2000 Visionaries.

The project will demonstrate the wealth of digital talent in the UK.

To kick off the project, The Drum interviewed Precedent in the latest issue about the challenges the agency has faced since it was established in Shoreditch in 1989.

From creating the first online download chart for MTV and designing and building the first website for BBC Radio 1, to surviving the dotcom crash of 2000, agency directors including founder Paul Hoskins (pictured) give insights into the company’s longevity.

The feature also highlights the changing role of digital in business, revealing that clients in the early days approached it as a ‘nice-to-have’, while it’s now an integral part of business strategy, evidenced in part by exhaustive briefs greeting the agency now, according to group commercial director Mark Sherwin.

“They didn’t have briefs,” recalls Sherwin. “People today spend far too long writing a complex brief rather than working in collaboration with an agency. It should still be about pioneering and solving something creatively together. The best relationships don’t start with a brief, the best relationships start with a conversation.”

The full list of all 20 Visionaries will be announced in the 30 April issue of The Drum, with feature articles on each agency running in the magazine throughout the year.
