Vine has announced a huge change to the way it operates, allowing users to send private videos to friends even if they are not signed up to the looping-video service.

Called Vine messages, the private messages can be created by selecting the new “messages” option in the navigation menu, recording a video and sending it to friends.

Jason Toff, project manager at Vine, explained: “From Vine’s early days, we recognised that there was a growing desire and need for private messaging on Vine. We’ve watched the community come up with some clever ways to send videos to their friends as we’ve been working on this solution.

“You can send a VM to multiple people. Each conversation is one-to-one; if you want to send a video to eight friends, you will start eight separate conversations. Your messages inbox has two sections: Friends (people you know) and Other (people outside your network).”

The updates from Vine also allow users to customise their profile with colour.
