Twitter has begun investigating reports that it has been blocked by the Turkish government, following comments made by the country’s Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan who threatened to ban the platform.

Claims have been made by some users in the country that when they attempt to access to Twitter website, they are being redirected to a message from the Turkish communications regulator which cited four court orders for the block.

Erdogan is widely reported to have threatened the site at a local rally yesterday, stating: "Twitter, mwitter! We will wipe out all of these.”

He added: "The international community can say this, can say that. I don't care at all. Everyone will see how powerful the Republic of Turkey is."

Upon discovering the block, #TwitterisblockedinTurkey began to trend globally in protest.

Twitter is said to have confirmed that it is looking into the matter, however at the time of writing it had yet to issue a formal statement.
