Facebook and Google saw an increase of $6.92bn in net mobile ad revenues in 2013, research from eMarketer has found, as global mobile ad spending as a whole increased 105 per cent to total $17.96bn.

The two global companies accounted for more than two thirds of worldwide mobile ad spending in 2013, the research discovered.

In 2013, Facebook accounted for 17.5 per cent of the global mobile ad market, and eMarketer predicts it will rise again this year to 21.7 per cent.

eMarketer added: “Google still owns a plurality of the mobile advertising market worldwide, taking a portion of nearly 50 per cent in 2013, but the rapid growth of Facebook will cause the search giant's share to drop to 46.8 per cent in 2014.”

It is also predicted that Twitter – which in 2013 accounted for 2.4 per cent of the worldwide mobile advertising market, will see this ramp up to 2.6 per cent this year.

The increase in mobile ad spend is affecting the net ad revenues worldwide: In 2012, only 11 per cent of Facebook's net ad revenues worldwide came from mobile, and last year, that figure jumped to 45.1 per cent. It is expected that almost two thirds (63.4 per cent) of Facebook's net digital ad revenues will come from mobile this year.

Overall this year, mobile advertising is on pace to rise another 75.1 per cent to $31.45bn, when mobile will account for nearly one-quarter of total digital ad spending worldwide. By 2018, mobile internet ad spend show reach almost $95bn.
