An opt-in preview of a new look BBC iPlayer is rolling out today, with an optimised responsive design, advanced recommendations and smarter search.

In the coming months, the BBC iPlayer mobile and tablets apps will be updated with the new look and feel, which includes improved access to channels and categories and image-led navigation.

“BBC iPlayer is really popular, and new iPlayer will be even better,” director general Tony Hall said.

“You’ll be able to find so many more programmes you might like – and I hope everyone enjoys the new design. It’s just a first step to re-inventing BBC iPlayer, the best online television service in the world.”

In January 2014 there were 315 million requests on iPlayer - averaging over 10 million requests a day – while almost a million people downloaded the app over the 2013 Christmas period.

BBC iPlayer has also announced a ‘raft’ of newly commissioned projects, including original comedy shorts. This comes as BBC announces plans to move BBC Three online only.
