Do you like David Cameron? Conservative party chiefs are believed to have spent as much as £7,500 on Facebook ads urging the public to like the prime minister’s Facebook page.

In the last month, Cameron has doubled the number of likes he has, and is now sitting at 129,473 at time of writing.

The £7,500 figure predicted by marketing experts to the Mail on Sunday is based on results, up to an agreed maximum, with Facebook charging about 50p per ‘like’.

Conservatives have said that this is ‘above board’ and common practice’, but Labour MP Sheila Gilmore has said ‘It looks as if David Cameron is buying popularity. There is no end to his ego, paying for fake Facebook friends.’

This was revealed less than a week after Cameron was mocked on Twitter by stars such as Sir Patrick Stewart.
