Russia Today presenter Liz Wahl has dramatically quit her job live on-air by ditching a Kremlin sanctioned script to tell her audience that she could no longer ‘be part of a network that whitewashes the actions’ of President Putin. The move has prompted fellow RT anchor Abby Martin, who made headlines of her own earlier this week when she openly criticized Russia’s military action in Ukraine during an episode of ‘Breaking the Set’. She too now plans to resign. In her speech to viewers Wahl said: “Last night RT made headlines when one of our anchors went on the record and said Russian intervention in Crimea is wrong and indeed, as a reporter on this network, I face many ethical and moral challenges.”Wahl, whose grandparents fled Soviet aggression in Hungary, added that her own partner worked as a military medic, making her position untenable. She said: "He sees every day the firsthand accounts of the ultimate prices people pay for this country," Wahl said of her partner. "That is why, personally, I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin. I’m proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth. And that is why, after this newscast, I’m resigning."Wahl has received support for her move from some colleagues and on social media, although RT bosses were less impressed – describing the move as a ‘publicity stunt’.
