HeraldScotland, one of Scotland’s leading national newspapers, has partnered with digital marketing agency Equator to create the ‘Twitterendum”, an online gauge to monitor the real-time sentiment of tweets related to the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence.

Grant McLennan, the Equator developer who developed the Twitterendum, said: “Some believe that there is a direct correlation between the amount of "talk" surrounding a campaign and the number of votes received by a campaign on polling day. This was certainly true of the US Congressional Election in 2010 but, generally speaking, it’s not the most scientific of measures.

“The point of the Twitterendum, though, is not to predict the result, but rather to provide a tangible handle on the current trend of debate on Twitter. I think the real interest is in the connection between the news and opinion: large shifts in opinion are usually mirrored by headline stories. It is this connection that provides insight into both the behaviour of human opinion and the impact of attempted opinion shifting press releases.”

The Twitterendum will be hosted on HeraldScotland’s website until polling day on September 18th.
