Apple has unveiled its new in-car iPhone system, CarPlay, designed to make using the smartphone whilst driving a safer and smarter experience on specially customised Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo vehicles.

Developed in collaboration with vehicle manufacturers the system streamlines the process of making calls, using maps, listening to music and accessing messages by using voice or touch commands.

These are delivered through the cars own interface or via a voice-control button affixed to the steering wheel

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing, said: “CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car. iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction. We have an amazing lineup of auto partners rolling out CarPlay, and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.”

Other manufacturers; including BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp have committed to employing the technology at a later stage.
