Ericsson and Facebook have announced that they are to collaborate on the creation of a new innovation lab to support the work of internet.org; an organisation broadening the internet to reach emerging markets end enhancing mobile accessibility.

The new lab aims to democratise internet access to all by optimising applications, networks and devices for the next 5 billion internet users.

Scheduled to launch in the second half of 2014 at Facebook’s Menlo Park Campus, California, the new lab will combine Ericsson’s expertise in mobile networks with Facebook’s own strengths to broaden developers access to multiple network environments, irrespective of location.

Jay Parikh, vice president of infrastructure engineering at Facebook said: "With this lab, developers will be able to simulate network conditions typically found in new markets, giving them an environment to test and optimize their applications under a number of different scenarios. This is a unique capability that Ericsson brings to the table and we are happy they have taken a leadership position with us in this initiative."
