A social experiment conducted by Norwegian charity SOS Children’s Village to see what happened when a child was left alone in the cold has gone viral.

The charity used hidden cameras to film a shivering 11 year-old boy as he sat alone rubbing his arms at a bus stop in Oslo.

The experiment is part of a campaign to gather donations to send coats and blankets to help Syrian children get through the winter.

Child actor Johannes sat at a bus stop wearing a thin t-shirt and jeans and the film shows the reaction of strangers that sit next to him, many handing over coats, scarves and gloves in the freezing temperatures.

Synne Rønning, who helped create the video told the SOS website: "The campaign has worked as an eye opener - people who watch it ask themselves: What would I do? The goal was to touch upon the fear of becoming numb to crises that don't affect you directly.”

The video, which has received over 10 million views, ends with the message: “Are you a person who would act when you see someone who needs help?” followed by information about how to send donations to the charity.
