Google has shown off a new breed of smartphone, codenamed Project Tango, that comes equipped with hi-tech sensors which enable it to map the surrounding environment in 3D.

The prototype gadget can update its position in real-time by taking an inconceivable 250,000 measurements each and every second – opening up the possibility of innovations in mapping, navigation and gaming.

To realise these goals the tech giant’s Advanced Technology and Projects unit has released 200 early models of the device to developers to make apps which take advantage of these functions.

In a statement Google said: “We are physical beings that live in a 3D world. Yet, our mobile devices assume that physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen.

"The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion. We're ready to put early prototypes into the hands of developers that can imagine the possibilities and help bring those ideas into reality."
