Tesco has been forced to pull the plug on more than 2,000 customer accounts after they were compromised by hackers and had their login names and passwords distributed online.

The data is believed to have been compiled using data from other sites with the unidentified hackers trawling lists of previously hacked accounts from other websites for matching log-in and password details for Tesco.com.

Around 2,239 matches were found in this way, allowing the criminals to steal store vouchers by hijacking the compromised accounts.

In a statement Tesco said: “We have contacted all customers who may have been affected and are committed to ensuring that none of them miss out as a result of this," Tesco said in a statement.

"We will issue replacement vouchers to the very small number who are affected."
