The Weekly Independent Newspaper Association (WINA) which represents small independent local publishers, is set to unveil a TV campaign next Friday (21 February) to promote the importance of local papers.

The animated ad sees a character called Ray, whose life is followed through the local paper, from birth, nativity play and environmental campaigning through to the start of his own business, as the ad looks to promote local weekly newspapers as the 'local point of community life'.

Joanna Parlby, chairman of WINA and managing director of the Newark Advertiser Media Group, said: “We are working to dispel some of the myths that local newspapers and the role they have in their communities may be under threat.

“We are confident that the closeness and trust we share with the readers and advertisers we have in every community in print and online will enable us to carry on serving them as we have done through the many economic upturns and downturns.”

Entitled ‘Local Weekly Newspapers – With You All the Way’, the 30 second ad will be shown on ITV in Central, West Country, Granada, Border, Yorkshire, Wales and West, Meridian, and Carlton regions, while an extended 90 second version will appear on the websites of the newspapers involved.
