Czech Radio, the national broadcaster for the Czech Republic, is enabling the country’s fans to support its Winter Olympics team without having to leave their home turf.

With hotel costs, flight prices, visa complications, and historical political issues leaving many Czech sports enthusiasts out in the cold, the Fanstars application for iOS and Android allows supporters to tag and leave messages on the one thing both fans and athletes will have equal access to during the games – the night sky.

Conceptualised by Ogilvy & Mather with Geometry Global, and developed by Adikt Mobile, Czech Radio’s deputy CEO, Jiri Svoboda, explained: “The Czechs are traditionally huge fans of winter sports, and participate in them at school from an early age. We know that they are proud of their team, which makes us delighted to have found a way for those not attending the games to cheer the nation on.”

Once installed fans simply need to point their handset skyward to fly through a flat shaded 3D universe to select the star of their choice. With 4,000 actual stars dynamically rendered in the app, Czechs can leave their words of congratulations, support or sympathy for the country’s team or any of its 88 individual athletes.

Svoboda added: “This year’s location may have made for a less than ideal turnout. But if our team ever needs to know that the nation is behind them, all they need to do is look up.”

In addition to being able to leave Czech athletes messages the athletes themselves also have the ability to respond to any of the messages left for them using the Fanstars app.
