Freesat, the subscription free TV service, has launched a new app which turns any iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into a remote control.

Developed by Nice Agency, the app can be linked with Freesat’s Freetime service allowing users set recordings remotely.

The app also includes a Roll Back TV Guide which relays the last seven days of TV and offers TV recommendations on what to watch via Showcase – encouraging viewers to browse through programme picks for the week ahead and set reminders to view.

Viewers of free TV in the UK, whether they have Freesat or not, will also be able to search and find programmes from On Demand players including BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5, but from there Freesat users can then launch from the app direct to their TV.

Emma Scott, managing director of Freesat, explained: “The new Freesat App is, we believe, a game changer for the free TV market. January is naturally a popular month for staying in – so it’s perfect timing to make the most of all the great new TV programmes that are on via the Freesat App. Making this free app available to all UK free TV viewers fits with our core goal at Freesat of opening up fantastic subscription free TV.”

Peter Dolukhanov, managing director of Nice Agency, added: “It’s been great working with Freesat and we're thrilled to have helped put Freesat users in greater control on the content they watch. The project was a perfect fit for us, with our specialism of building video on demand discovery and viewing solutions across mobile, tablet and beyond".

The new app is being marketed as 'Your clever little telly app from Freesat' and the launch is being supported by an ‘unboxing’ video starring TV presenter Rick Edwards.

Freesat has said it will continue to evolve the new app, making it available on more platforms and devices over time.
