The games, which take place in Sochi, Russia, and begin next month, will be covered by the BBC with a multi-platform approach which will automatically tailor to suit the needs of whichever devices are used to keep up with the latest news and results.

The six live HD streams will deliver more than 650 hours of coverage, while video quality and content will be adapted automatically on all devices to provide content in the best quality. All of the coverage can be accessed by visiting the BBC Sport home web page.

A statement said: “Building on the BBC’s digital success of the London 2012 Games and other major sporting events in 2013, the BBC has developed an innovative new approach to delivering world-class live coverage across PC, tablet and mobile.

“This will power the BBC’s digital coverage of a live event for the first time during Sochi 2014, delivering key benefit to audiences and leaving a lasting technology legacy at the corporation.”

Live action will also become automatically available through the BBC Sport app without the need for an update, available on Android, iOS and Kindle Fire devices.

As well as sports coverage, the BBC Sport web page will collate the best of comments from viewers via email, SMS and social media and put them on display alongside comments from BBC reporters.

The coverage builds on the BBC's success at the London 2012 Olympics, which delivered record traffic numbers to BBC Sport online.
