BBC Trust director Nicholas Kroll is to retire at the end of June, the Trust has announced.

Announcement: Kroll will retire at the age of 60

Kroll, who will be 60 when he retires, served as director of governance and then director of BBC Trust Unit during his 10 years at the organisation.

Kroll said: “At the end of a career in the public service it has been a privilege to serve BBC governors and BBC Trustees under three chairmen for a period approaching 10 years.

“During that period I believe the governance of the BBC has become stronger. The recent review of governance led by Lord Patten and Tony Hall will add to the Trust’s capacity to hold the BBC to account on behalf of licence fee payers.”

Trust chairman Lord Patten said: “He has worked tirelessly and intelligently for BBC licence fee payers. All who have enjoyed working with him so much will miss him and wish him well for the future.”

Kroll was called to give evidence to the House of Commons public accounts committee last year over the executive pay-off controversy at the BBC.

The BBC recently announced a shake-up at the BBC Trust in a bid to improve transparency following a “year of difficult events”.
