Google received over 235 million requests to remove links to copyright infringing content during 2013.

According to file sharing news website TorrentFreak, which examined Google’s transparency report, the number of takedown requests received by the search giant more than quadrupled during the last year.

Requests included major US media companies such as NBC Universal, Warner Brothers, Microsoft, Disney Enterprises and Fox, and although the requests were received, action was only taken for nine per cent of them - around 21 million URLs, leaving over 210 million still live.

The media owner with the largest number of take down requests was found to be online video tutorial website Lynda.com having submitted 1,178,809 URLs to be removed, of which over half (57 per cent) saw no action taken.

According to Google it has received 23,211,997 requests for URL’s to be removed for copyright reasons in the last month, of which 3,662 were from copyright owners.
