Facebook has topped the list of Google’s most searched-for terms of 2013, with YouTube and Google itself following in second and third place respectively.

Also featuring in the top 10 search terms of the year were shopping sites eBay, Amazon and Argos, with news sites BBC News and Daily Mail taking sixth and eighth position.

Google’s commonly asked questions poll was also topped by Facebook, with the number one spot on its ‘what is’ searchlist taken by the question ‘what is Facebook?’. The second most popular question users asked of Google was ‘what is love?’.

Popular topics users asked the search site for answers to included cancer and blood pressure, with ‘what is the minimum wage?’ and ‘what is Universal Jobmatch?’ also making the top 10.

Top trending search terms – those which have seen the largest increase in traffic in 2013 compared with 2012 – mostly reflected on major news events.

Fast and Furious actor Paul Walker’s death at the beginning of December topped the trending search terms list, with Nelson Mandela and Margaret Thatcher’s deaths also ranking within the top 10.

The birth of Prince George ranked at number four, a contrast to its number one position in Yahoo’s most searched for terms of 2013 list.

Microsoft’s Xbox One and the iPhone 5S launch were revealed as the biggest tech trending search terms, and in terms of movies Superman reboot Man of Steel took the top spot. Animated film Despicable Me 2 made the cut and was one of three sequels to feature in the top 10.
