Research from mobile retail agency Red Ant has revealed that 85 per cent of frontline retail staff believe sales would improve if their employer gave them access to an iPad or other tablet device.

More than three quarters (78 per cent) of retail staff aged 16-24 – an age group which makes up almost a third of the UK’s entire retail industry workforce – said the introduction of iPads and tablets would change the way they feel about work, with 60 per cent happy use technology to assist customers as they are used to using mobile devices and apps in their day to day life.

Of those 16-24 year old retail workers surveyed 45 per cent said using technology in their sales role would make them feel more valued by their employer, with a third saying it would make them more enthusiastic about work, and 40 per cent believing that it would enable them to do a better job.

“There is a huge number of young people working in retail…These guys can’t remember a time before mobile devices and are more comfortable using them than anybody else in the entire business. But many retailers are failing to take advantage of this – there are plenty of devices being given out for work use higher up the chain, but not to those who can actually use them to make a real difference,” explained Dan Mortimer, CEO of Red Ant.

“Our research shows that shop floor staff really believe they could increase sales if they had an iPad on hand to provide additional product information and a quicker, more valuable service for customers. Retailers should be using technology to empower their frontline employees with the ability to provide better customer service and keep customers coming back for more.”

The survey also revealed that 78 per cent of 18-24 year old workers felt better training could be provided by their employers in order to make more sales on the shop floor.
