Microsoft has launched its Roman-era set videogame, Ryse: Son of Rome, with a new campaign which centres on a visual effects-driven ad.

Working with twofifteen McCann, production company Smuggler and a visual effects team from MPC LA the campaign wanted to maintain the game’s vision of colossal scale and intense combat in a 60-second spot and four short films.

The creative centres around the story of Marius, the game’s central character, and used live action combat scenes, shot in Bulgaria, which were then enhanced through large-scale CG architecture, digital matte paintings, and massive agents that blended with second unit plates of warring barbarians and Roman guards.

“Brian’s [Beletic, director] vision was to create a film trailer for the game using a series of increasingly epic shots,” explained MPC LA creative director Paul O’Shea. “Our challenge was to dress the locations with believable battle atmosphere and make set extensions for the coliseum and palace that felt real but matched the unbelievable scale of the game assets.”
