The appointment of Pope Francis was the most talked about topic on Facebook in 2013, while Andy Murray winning Wimbledon has the most popular topic in the UK, research from Facebook has found.

Baroness Margaret Thatcher passing away, the Duchess of Cambridge giving birth to Prince George, Sir Alex Ferguson stepping down as manager of Manchester United and the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 also were among the top ten topics discussed on Facebook in the UK.

The birth of the royal baby and the passing of Margaret Thatcher also made the international list.

The overall major life events for Facebook users, according to timelines, were adding a relationship; getting married; getting engaged and travelling.
