Discount retailer Aldi, better known for its bargain bread and cheap meats, is to take on tech giants such as Apple and Samsung at their own game with the launch of its £79.99 Lifetab tablet.

Following in the footsteps of Argos’s MyTablet and Tesco’s Huddle the affordable device will launch this Sunday in limited quantities.

Positioned at the budget end of the tablet market the device comes equipped with a relatively puny 8GB of storage and a screen resolution of just 1024x600, but the arresting price is likely to make it a popular stocking filler for Christmas scrimpers nonetheless.

Running the popular Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean software the tablet weighs in at 301g and sports a 1.6GHz quad-core CPU together with front and rear facing cameras of 0.3MP and 2MP respectively.
