RBS and NatWest say they have finally managed to fix a series of computer glitches which prevented customers from making payments over the busiest Christmas shopping day of the year, Cyber Monday.

Gremlins in the banks technical systems meant that debit and credit card holders were unable to make payments or log-in to their online banking, prompting a deluge of complaints on social media platforms from irate shoppers.

Websites for both banks were also affected by the glitches.

To mend broken fences RBS, which owns NatWest, has promised to reimburse customers for any losses incurred as a result of a failure to make payments

In a statement RBS said: “The systems issues that affected our customers last night have now been resolved and all of our services are now back working normally."

Taxpayer owned RBS has repeatedly been brought down by computer glitches recently, the latest hiccup being the third in 18 months.

This included a ‘hardware fault’ in March and a ‘major computer issue’ last year affecting cash withdrawals and sending some payments awry.
