Britain has come near the top of a European league table for once, although only when it comes to the proportion of time spent by the average citizens sat slumped in front of their telly.

The European Social Survey found that 32 per cent of Britons spent more than three hours every weekday in front of their TV’s, second only to Bulgaria’s 43 per cent in terms of overall consumption.

Only 13 per cent of Germans, by contrast, spent a comparable amount of time in the company of their goggle boxes.

Thirty European nations were compared for the survey which found that the average proportion of telly addicts across the continent stood at 21 per cent.

In terms of content a total of 13 per cent of Brits shirk any form of news or current affairs throughout the working week, a figure which compares badly to the likes of Germany and Finland where the figure is four per cent.

Researchers omitted to look at weekend viewing habits, which would likely inflate the figures still further.
