UK retail sales of goods and services enabled via a mobile device have been projected to more than double this year, hitting £8.17bn, equivalent to an 18 per cent share of total ecommerce sales.

The figures, compiled by eMarketer, also show tablet commerce tripling this year to £4.74bn, a 10.4 per cent share of retail ecommerce sales… a figure which will rise to £18bn, a quarter of all UK retail ecommerce sales, by 2017.

The seemingly unstoppable rise of tablets is reflected in the leapfrogging of smartphones by such devices with tablets predicted to account for 58 per cent of the market versus 40.5 per cent for smartphones.

Estimates from eMarketer suggest that 20m UK consumers now use a tablet with mcommerce spending expected to be over twice that of smartphones by 2015 and three times that of smartphones by 2017.

The overall retail ecommerce sector is expected to rise 18 per cent to hit £45.4bn this year with double digit growth rates anticipated for the foreseeable future.
